Friday Nights:
Newest Residency has commenced with the opening of "Firefly" on 54 Spring Street on Friday Nights. This is a departure from the post fraternity party that I've been doing at Gatsby's. The Lounge and the Music is more tasteful and sophisticated; running across the lines of World, Acid Jazz, Funk, Electronica, a bit of House and a tad of rock and roll. Hours are 10-4am.
Saturday Nights:
Currently in residence at Gatsby's in Soho. 10pm to 4am. This place is great for semi private parties and large reservations. I recommend Thursday because it accommodates more people because you do not have to compete with the weekend crowd. The staff is friendly, menu is generous and Guiness fresh.
Thursday nights:
Place: Swift Hiberian Lounge on 34 east 4th street; right off of the Bowery. DJ music starts at 9pm to 2am. Slightly more traditional Irish Pub, with dark wood, no televisions and a pulpit to prop the dj for "fishbowl" viewing. Programming is primarily rock and roll but can change depending on who and what comes in.
Recent Private Events Include: HBO's Soprano's final season's promotional photoshoot at Silvercup Studio's L.I.C., New York Magazine's Holiday Party and a few special occasions with Kelly & Peng & Eat Rice Inc., restaraunt group.
During a 2000-2002 stretch, one of Marcus' residencies was at a Lounge called Absolutely 4th where he was written up for starting a throwback 80's etc. night. Please see review in Shecky's Bar & Lounge Guide Circa 2001.
Two Reviews from Shecky's Bar and Lounge Guide:
"Absolutely 4th is absolutely fabulous. This cozy, romantic, and stylish
little lounge might be one of the best-kept secrets in the West Village.
Behind an unassuming exterior lies a Moroccan-themed bar/lounge that has
visitors believing in love at first sight. Wednesdays are reserved for
karaoke while other eve's invite patrons to sway to the DJ. Thursday's
guilty pleasure '80s new wave party will soon have you screaming out
requests for secret shame bands whose names you've long been repressing." -Shecky's Bar & Lounge Guide, 2001
"Thursdays are a night for guilty pleasures
with 80s new wave playing, and before you even realize it you are requesting
Erasure from the DJ." -Shecky's Bar & Lounge Guide, 2003
I want to thank the Senior Editor, Erin Donnelly, for providing me with these past reviews. I highly reccommend this guide as a resource to ones libations, festivities and otherwise.
Prior to this stint. Marcus worked as a DJ for many large clubs and Raves throughout the greater Seattle area. Some of the venues include: The Romper Room (now called the Watertown), Belltown NightClub, Celeberties, Phantom, the Vogue and a few others in the early 90's.
